At SRJ Windows, we understand that the functionality of your home is key to comfort and convenience. French doors are a beautiful addition to any home, providing an elegant transition between spaces. However, knowing how to operate them effectively is essential to appreciate their full potential.

Opening Your French Door

To open your French door, start by ensuring the door is unlocked. Proceed by turning the key in the lock to the open position. Once unlocked, gently pull the priority door’s handle downwards. This action should release the locking mechanism, allowing you to smoothly open the door.

Opening the Secondary Door

When opening the secondary door (otherwise known as the slave door), begin by opening the main, priority door. Then, simply pull down the handle on the secondary door to release the bolts. After both bolts are fully disengaged, you can pull the secondary door open just like the primary one. To close the secondary door, simply reverse these steps.

Closing Your French Door

When you need to close your French door, whether exiting to the outdoors or shutting it for the evening, start by gently pulling or pushing the door to the closed position, making sure it is properly aligned in the frame. To secure the door in place, lift the handle upwards. This upward motion engages the cams, the components in the door mechanism that lock into place, securing the door shut. It is also essential to keep in mind that if both doors are open, ensure to close the slave door first, followed by the master door. This ensures that the locking mechanisms align correctly and that both doors can be secured properly without any issues.

Locking Your French Door

Once your French door is closed, ensuring it is locked securely is straightforward. With the door shut and the handle lifted to engage the cams, simply lift the handle upwards to its fullest extent and then turn the key until the locking mechanism is securely fastened. This will ensure that the door cannot be opened from the outside, providing safety and peace of mind.

Additional Tips for French Doors Opening Outwards

If your French doors open outwards, it’s worth noting that there are concealed restrictors at the top of the door. These restrictors prevent the door from opening too widely, but they do not hold it in an open position; they are only there to protect your door from damage due to over-extension. These can be adjusted with a Phillips screwdriver to suit your desired opening range, allowing for greater control over the door’s motion and positioning. If you want to hold the doors in an open position, a small weight or door stop can be used.

Make the Most of Your French Doors

Operating a French door is simple once you know the correct procedures. By following these steps, you can ensure that your French doors function beautifully and effectively, enhancing both the security and aesthetic of your home. Remember, if you encounter any issues or have any doubts about operating your French doors, professional assistance is just a contact away. At SRJ Windows, we’re here to ensure your home enhancements are as seamless and beneficial as possible. Discover our premium French Door range on the SRJ Windows website today.
