At SRJ Windows, we pride ourselves on delivering quality products and installations that enhance your home for years to come. Many of our customers choose a rubber membrane roof as part of their home improvement projects because it is durable, long lasting, and low maintenance.

However, like any part of your property, your rubber roof benefits from proper care and attention. Below, we’ve outlined some important maintenance guidelines to help you protect your investment and keep your roof in great condition. Whether you’re cleaning windows above the roof or simply inspecting it, these tips will ensure you avoid accidental damage and keep your roof looking and performing its best.

1. Always Use Walk Boards on Your Rubber Membrane Roof

These roofs are designed to be weather resistant and durable under normal conditions, but they are not intended to withstand constant foot traffic. Whenever you need to access the roof, for example, to clean windows, inspect gutters, or maintain nearby fixtures, it’s essential to use walk boards to distribute your weight evenly.

Walk boards help prevent concentrated pressure in one spot, which can stretch or damage the membrane. Place the boards carefully and make sure they are clean and stable before stepping on them. Using proper boards will reduce the risk of wear and tear and help prolong the life of your roof.

2. Do Not Stand Directly on the Rubber

It’s very important to avoid standing directly on the rubber itself. This is especially true when you’re cleaning windows or any glass panels that sit within the roof.

The rubber membrane is more fragile than it may appear, and direct contact with shoes or tools can leave scuffs, dents, or even punctures over time. If you must step on the roof, always use walk boards as described above, and take care not to drag or drop anything sharp or heavy while you work. Being mindful of where and how you stand will protect the integrity of your roof’s surface.

3. Ripples Are Normal: Your Rubber Roof Expands and Contracts

One of the natural characteristics of a rubber membrane roof is that it will expand and contract slightly as the temperature and weather conditions change. This means you may notice ripples or slight waves on the surface from time to time.

This is completely normal and not a cause for concern. The material is designed to move in this way to accommodate seasonal changes, and it will return to its usual state as conditions stabilise. If you’re ever unsure about any changes you notice, feel free to contact SRJ Windows for advice or a professional inspection.

4. Avoid Punctures and Tears

While rubber membrane roofs are highly resistant to the elements, they can be punctured if something heavy or sharp is dropped on them. For example, a ladder and tools can create a hole or tear in the membrane, which could lead to leaks and repairs.

Whenever you’re working near or on the roof, take extra care not to let anything fall or strike the surface. If you’re moving equipment nearby, keep it secure and avoid setting heavy items down directly on the membrane. Should you notice any damage, it’s best to have it checked and repaired promptly to avoid further issues.

5. Puddles Are Perfectly Normal on a Flat Rubber Roof

Finally, it’s worth noting that small puddles of water are to be expected on a flat rubber roof, particularly after heavy rain. Because of the flat design, water may not drain away as quickly as it does on a pitched roof.

On a rubber membrane surface, these puddles may also be more noticeable because of the matt finish of the material. Don’t worry, this is a normal characteristic of flat roofing and does not indicate a problem. The membrane is designed to withstand these small pools of water without compromising its integrity.

Step 6: Dry and Buff the Windows

Once you have squeegeed the entire window, use a lint free towel to dry any remaining water droplets. Start at the top and work your way down, making sure to dry the edges and corners of the glass. Finally, use a clean microfiber cloth to buff the windows and remove any remaining streaks.

Choose a Durable Rubber Roof

Rubber membrane roofs are a smart, durable choice for your home, but like all quality installations, they deserve a little care and attention to keep them in optimal condition.

Ensure your roof continues to perform beautifully for years to come by following our maintenance guidelines. If you ever have questions about your roof or any aspect of your SRJ Windows installation, our team is always here to help.
