Cleaning your windows may seem like a simple task, but if not done properly, it can leave streaks and smudges that can be frustrating to deal with. In this comprehensive guide, we will walk you through the steps to clean your windows effectively and achieve a streak free finish. Whether you have traditional casement windows, sliding sash windows, or even modern aluminium windows, these cleaning tips will work for all types of windows.

Step 1: Gather the Necessary Supplies

Before you begin cleaning your windows, make sure you have all the supplies you need. This includes a bucket, warm water, a squeegee, a microfiber cloth or sponge, and a lint free towel. Avoid using paper towels or newspapers, as they can leave behind lint and ink stains.

Step 2: Prepare the Windows

Start by removing any objects from the windowsill and dusting the area. This will prevent dirt and debris from getting on the windows during the cleaning process. If you have window screens, you can remove them and vacuum them to remove any dust or dirt.

Step 3: Water in the Best Cleaning Solution

Avoid using harsh chemicals or ammonia-based cleaners, as they can damage certain types of windows, especially those with low-emissivity coatings. Instead, fill a bucket with warm water only, as this is the best cleaning solution.

Step 4: Wash the Windows

Dip a microfiber cloth or sponge into the warm water and wring out any excess water. Start by wiping the window frame and tracks, removing any dirt or grime. Then, dip the cloth or sponge back into the water and wash the glass in a circular motion. Make sure to cover the entire surface of the glass.

If the frames have stubborn stains, we recommend using a specialised uPVC or aluminium cleaner. As well as specialised window cleaners for glass. To ensure proper use, always read the cleaner’s guidelines carefully.

Step 5: Use a Squeegee After Washing the Glass

Use a clean squeegee to remove excess water and achieve a streak free finish. Start at the top corner of the window and pull the squeegee down in a straight line, overlapping each stroke slightly. Wipe the squeegee blade with a lint free towel after each stroke to prevent streaks.

Step 6: Dry and Buff the Windows

Once you have squeegeed the entire window, use a lint free towel to dry any remaining water droplets. Start at the top and work your way down, making sure to dry the edges and corners of the glass. Finally, use a clean microfiber cloth to buff the windows and remove any remaining streaks.

Additional Window Cleaning Tips

  • Avoid cleaning windows on a sunny day, as the cleaning solution can dry too quickly and leave streaks. It’s best to clean windows on a cloudy or overcast day.
  • Don’t forget to clean the window sills and tracks. Use a damp cloth or sponge to remove any dirt or debris.
  • Regularly cleaning your windows can help maintain their appearance and extend their lifespan. Aim to clean your windows at least once a month and hardware more frequently, especially if you live in an area with high levels of dust, pollen, or pollution.
