To effectively clean your window and door hardware, you will require some basic tools and cleaning agents. All you’d need is a soft cloth and mild soap, although it is essential to use warm water, and altogether to avoid any acidic products (including dishwashing soap). Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive materials that might damage the finish of your hardware.
Begin by wiping the window locks with a dry cloth to remove any loose dust. Take a clean cloth and warm water to wipe clean. After this, wipe clean with a damp cloth and dry thoroughly. This can be done very occasionally; however, it would be recommended to be done weekly to keep everything clean and running smoothly. They can also be kept in their best condition by lubricating with a little light 3 in 1 engineering oil.
For the hinges, open the window fully to expose the hinge mechanism. Brush off any dirt or debris with a soft cloth, then use a warm, damp cloth to clean away any stubborn dirt. Finally, dry the hinges completely with a clean cloth.
Use a damp cloth to clean the surface of the window handles. Wipe down with a clean, dry cloth afterwards.
Ensure all parts are dry after cleaning to prevent moisture-related damage or corrosion.
DO NOT USE – washing up liquid or detergents. Abrasive cleaners or scouring pads. High pressure or steam cleaners. Bleach, solvents (spirits and thinners) or adhesives. Before cleaning your door remove all rings, bracelets and watches.
Clean using a soft cloth dampened with warm water, carefully removing any fingerprints and stains.
For the keyhole and locking mechanism, use a dry toothbrush to clear out dust or debris. For visible parts of the lock, follow the cleaning steps mentioned for doorknobs.
Wipe these areas with warm water and a clean cloth.
Similar to window hinges, these should be cleaned with a clean cloth and warm water, then dried thoroughly.
