The Do’s of Door Cleaning

Keeping your doors clean is essential for maintaining their appearance and longevity. No matter the door material, proper cleaning techniques can help prevent damage and keep your home looking its best. In this guide, we’ll explore the dos and don’ts of door cleaning, ensuring you have the right knowledge to care for your doors effectively.

1. Regularly Clean Door Frames

Regular cleaning is key to maintaining the appearance of your doors. For exterior doors, aim to clean them monthly with warm water and a sponge, especially if they’re exposed to the elements. This helps prevent dirt and grime from building up, which can lead to more significant issues down the line.

2. Clean & Dry Glass

For doors such as bifold doors and sliding patio doors, clean glass is vital for the upkeep of your doors. When cleaning door frames, we also recommend cleaning and drying glass monthly with a glass cleaner. Discover more information on how to clean windows and glass.

3. Protect Your Ironmongery

Keep ironmongery hardware and decorative elements sparkling by cleaning and drying them weekly. For long lasting protection, use car or furniture polish monthly.

4. Clean Hardware and Locks

Don’t forget about the hardware! Regularly clean door handles, locks, and hinges to ensure they function smoothly. Use water and a soft cloth to wipe away dirt and grime. Lubricating locks 2-4 times a year with 3-in-1 oil can also help prevent sticking and ensure they operate correctly.

5. Use Graphite Powder

Due to its low friction properties, graphite powder is an excellent lubricant for mechanical hardware. We recommend using this on door barrels at least twice a year, to prevent wear and tear as well as the build up of dirt and grime.

The Don’ts of Door Cleaning

Now that you’ve discovered the do’s of door cleaning, let’s explore what you should avoid when cleaning doors.

1. Don’t Use Abrasive Cleaners

Avoid using abrasive cleaners or scrubbers on any type of door. These can scratch and damage the surface, leading to unsightly marks and a need for costly repairs. Stick to gentle cleaning solutions that are safe for the material of your door.

2. Don’t Use Solvent Based Cleaning Agents

Like abrasive cleaners, solvent based cleaners can damage the finish of your door, especially if they contain bleaching agents. If water doesn’t cut through stubborn dirt, use warm soapy water or specialised uPVC or composite door cleaners

3. Don’t Use Pressure Washers on Doors

While it might be tempting to use a pressure washer for a quick clean, this can cause significant damage to your doors by damaging seals. Stick to gentle cleaning methods to preserve the integrity of your doors.

4. Don’t Overlook Deep Cleaning

While regular cleaning is essential, don’t overlook the need for deep cleaning from time to time. This might involve removing dirt and grime and reapplying lubricating oil and powders to hardware.

5. Don’t Use Silicone or Water Displacing Sprays

These solutions are not long lasting lubricants. Silicon sprays create a thin film which doesn’t provide sufficient lubrication, while water displacing sprays evaporate quickly. They also attract dust and dirt, which can clog door locks and hinges.

6. Don’t Mechanically Dry Your Door

After cleaning, ensure that your doors are thoroughly dried with a soft, dry cloth to wipe down the door. To prevent damage to your door, we do not recommend using mechanical tools, such as rotating brushes, to dry your door’s surface.

Maintain Your Doors with Ease

Caring for your doors doesn’t have to be a chore. By following these dos and don’ts, you can keep your doors looking great and functioning well for years to come. Regular cleaning and using the right products will help you maintain the beauty and integrity of your doors.
