Opening Your Sliding Sash Windows
Your sliding sash windows are designed to be both practical and effortless to use. Unlike conventional casement windows, which swing outward or inward, sliding sash windows move vertically within their frame.

At SRJ Windows, we strive to deliver the highest quality windows that are both aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Our sliding sash windows combine the timeless elegance of traditional design with modern materials and functionality.
To help you get the most from your new windows, we’ve put together this guide to explain how to operate them correctly and safely. Whether you’re opening the sashes for ventilation, cleaning the glass, or simply enjoying the view, these tips will ensure smooth operation and protect your windows for years to come.
Your sliding sash windows are designed to be both practical and effortless to use. Unlike conventional casement windows, which swing outward or inward, sliding sash windows move vertically within their frame.
To open the bottom sash, unlock the window using the central catch or lock. Then, holding the handles or frame, slide the bottom sash upwards to the desired position.
To open the top sash, again unlock if necessary, then gently pull the top sash downwards.
You can open both sashes at the same time to create excellent airflow. This allows warm air to escape through the top opening while cooler air enters through the bottom, an effective way to ventilate your room naturally.
When opening either sash, use smooth, steady movements. Avoid jerking or forcing the sashes, as this can damage the mechanism or cause them to become misaligned.
When you close your sliding sash windows, make sure both sashes are fully shut and aligned. Engage the lock in the centre of the meeting rails to secure the window in place.
Some models also feature ventilation locks or restrictors that allow you to lock the window slightly open for airflow while still keeping it secure. Always ensure the window is properly locked when leaving the property or at night to maintain security and insulation.
One of the great benefits of modern sliding sash windows from SRJ Windows is the tilt feature, which allows you to clean the external glass from inside your home, particularly useful on upper floors.
Here’s how to tilt your sashes for cleaning:
• Open the bottom sash slightly, about 100–150mm.
• Locate the tilt buttons or catches on the top of the sash, these are usually positioned towards each end of the sash.
• Press or slide both tilt buttons towards the centre and gently pull the top of the sash towards you. The sash will pivot inwards on its hinges, allowing access to the outside surface.
• Clean the glass and frame carefully using a soft cloth and mild cleaner. Read our guide on how to clean windows to ensure proper maintenance.
Once finished, tilt the sash back into the upright position, ensuring it clicks securely back into place.
The top sash may also tilt inwards in the same way. Open it slightly downward first, then engage the tilt buttons and gently pull the sash towards you. After cleaning, return the sash to its upright position and check that it is properly engaged.
Take care when tilting the sashes, support the weight of the sash at all times and avoid letting it swing or drop.
To keep your sliding sash windows working perfectly:
• Open and close the sashes gently, never force them.
• Keep the tracks and mechanisms clean and free from dust or debris.
• Periodically check that the locking mechanisms and tilt catches are functioning properly.
If you notice the sashes sticking or becoming difficult to move, contact SRJ Windows for advice, do not attempt to adjust the internal mechanism yourself.
At SRJ, our sliding sash windows are designed to offer the charm of traditional timber sash windows with the ease and convenience of modern technology. With proper use and maintenance, your sliding sash windows will remain a beautiful, functional part of your home for many years.
